Old Sawmill Station is the perfect Base Camp location to explore two National Forests, the Sawtooth National Recreation Area and tens of thousands of acres of Bureau of Land Management lands.

The Salmon Challis National Forest lies to the north of Old Sawmill Station.  The Sawtooth National Recreation Area (SNRA) lies to the south.  Lands outside the SNRA are a mix of BLM and Sawtooht National Forest Lands.  The nearby Wilderness areas are discussed on a separate page.

Forest Service offices are located in both Challis and Stanley.  The BLM office is in Challis. All three office have large amounts of printed maps and information.  Much information and many maps are also available online.

Above is a generalized map of the Salmon-Challis National Forest and below is a similar map of the Sawtooth.  The red arrows indicated the approximate location of Old Sawmill Station.

Below is a generalized map of the Sawtooth National Recreation Area.  Once again, the red arrow shows the approximate location of Old Sawmill Station.  The Sawtooth and Salmoin-Challis National Forests encompass some of the most spectacular, incredible lands in the entire National Forest System.  The SNRA now includes both the Sawtooth and Boulder-White Cloud Wilderness Area and is likewise includes so truly eye-popping scenery and resources.
